Farnham Educational Foundation scholarships and grants

Farnham College is pleased to announce the launch of two new financial awards, in partnership with the Farnham Educational Foundation (FEF):

  • the McLaughlin Scholarship worth £500 per year for high-achieving students with a clear career aspiration
  • the FEF Grant worth between £500–£1,500 each year to support students to reach their academic and career goals, by helping them with costs such as course equipment, travel and study opportunities

The Farnham Educational Foundation was established as a school in Farnham in the 16th century, became a Grammar School for boys in the 19th century and then a mixed sixth form college in 1973. The campus is owned by a charitable foundation responsible to the Charity Commission.

McLaughlin scholarships

McLaughlin Scholarships are in memory of John McLaughlin, Deputy Headmaster of Farnham Grammar School from 1972 to 1973 and then Deputy Principal of Farnham College until 1992.

The McLaughlin Scholarships, worth £500 per year, are intended to support students' progress on each year of their course and towards clear career aspirations. Applicants do not need to demonstrate a specific purpose for the financial award, the scholarship is designed to recognise and reward the hard work of the students and to support them as they transition to College and on to university or a professional career.

There are five scholarships available for each year of study: normally five scholarships available for year 1 students and five scholarships available for year 2 students. Students will be able to apply for a scholarship in each year of their studies at Farnham College, providing they meet the eligibility criteria. This will include any students who may be going on a to a third year of study at Farnham College.

The McLaughlin Scholarships are available to students who:

  • demonstrate clear goals and career aspirations
  • achieve outstanding grades at GCSE: six or more GCSEs at grades 7, 8, or 9 (equivalent to A* or A)
  • are going to study a one or two-year programme at Farnham College
  • maintain a minimum 90% prior year attendance at school or college

The above eligibility criteria are intended to ensure fairness in the allocation of the McLaughlin Scholarships. However, scholarship awards are offered at the sole discretion of the Farnham Educational Foundation. The Farnham Educational Foundation reserves the right to award scholarships, with reference to the criteria, as it sees fit.

Students are invited to apply for the McLaughlin Scholarship by completing this application form.

You can complete the application form if you are a current student moving on to your second or third year of study, or if you have applied to start Farnham College in September 2021.

Application forms must be completed by Friday 30 July and applicants will be informed of the outcome of the application by Friday 10 September.

The Farnham Educational Foundation grant

The Farnham Educational Foundation (FEF) grant will help students needing financial assistance to reach their academic and career goals, by helping them with costs such as course equipment, travel and study opportunities.

Interested students can apply for either £500, £1,000 or £1,500 in each year of their studies at Farnham College, providing they can demonstrate a clear need for the financial award and meet the eligibility criteria.

The FEF grant is available to students who:

  • have a specific purpose for the financial award*
  • are going to study a one- or two-year programme at Farnham College
  • maintain a minimum 90% prior-year attendance at school or college

*Intended uses of the funds could include:

  • course equipment, such as a laptop, specific piece of software or additional course materials
  • travel to and from college, work experience, university or employment interviews and other relevant activities
  • project costs
  • extra-curricular activities that support future career goals and aspirations, such as sporting clubs, music lessons, Scouts or Cadets, etc

The above eligibility criteria are intended to ensure fairness in the allocation of the FEF grant, however grants are offered at the sole discretion of the Farnham Educational Foundation. The Farnham Educational Foundation reserves the right to award grants, with reference to the criteria, as it sees fit.

Recipients of the grant should retain proof of purchase for all expenditure funded by the grant. The Farnham Educational Foundation or the college reserves the right to request proof of valid expenditure and to require the repayment of the scholarship if such proof is not provided.

Students are invited to apply for the FEF grant by completing this application form. You can complete the application form if you are a current student moving on to your second or third year of study, or if you have applied to start Farnham College in September 2021.
