Planned lockdown drill at Farnham College

We want to let students, parents and carers know that Farnham College will be carrying out a planned lockdown drill on Monday 5 October at 11.30am.

This is only a drill. There is no cause for concern and no action is required from parents or carers.

Lockdown drills are an important part of keeping our college community safe. They help students and staff understand what to do in the unlikely event of an emergency and allow us to test our procedures and communication systems.

What happens during a lockdown drill?

At 11.30am, the lockdown alarm will sound and an announcement will confirm that the college is in lockdown.

Students will be asked to follow instructions from staff and:

  • move to a safe place and remain out of sight, away from doors and windows
  • remain calm and quiet until further instructions are given
  • move to the nearest secure room or space if they are in a corridor, toilet, communal area or a room that cannot be secured
  • stay in place until they are told that the lockdown has ended.

Staff will secure doors and windows where appropriate.

As this is a planned drill, students should not call 999.

Once the drill has finished, an announcement will confirm that the lockdown is over and normal college activities will resume.

Why might a college need to go into lockdown?

Although these situations are rare, a lockdown could be used if there was a potential risk on or near the college site. This could include a dangerous person or animal, an incident in the surrounding community, a chemical or air pollution incident, or a terrorism-related incident.

Testing our new emergency communication system

This will be our first lockdown drill using Audiebant, our new mass communication and emergency lockdown system.

The drill will help us make sure announcements can be heard clearly across the campus and that students and staff are familiar with what they need to do.

Students can listen to the announcements in advance:

Thank you to our students, parents and carers for supporting us as we practise these important safety procedures and help keep everyone at Farnham College safe.

Best wishes,
